Mission
The Center for Biotechnology’s mission is to catalyze the translation of basic biomedical sciences into diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that benefit human health and society, and fuel economic growth.
Center-driven initiatives
have included the establishment of the Long Island High Technology Incubator
(LIHTI) program, founding of the New York Biotechnology Association (NYBA)
and the Long Island Life Sciences Initiative (LILSI), and the creation
of an Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program focused on the discovery
and development of academic-based technologies toward commercial goals.
Annual economic impact related to these activities approached $75M in
2001.

Overview
The Center for Biotechnology was established in 1983 as a cooperative
research and development partnership between universities, private
industry, and New York State. Its goal has been to capitalize on
the resources of New York's medical biotechnology research for the
purpose of fuelling economic development in New York State.
The Center is funded by the New York Office of Science, Technology
and Academic Research (NYSTAR). |

Center's Activities
The Center has significantly expanded the breadth and scope of
its activities over the course of this last year. In addition to
ongoing efforts to identify commercially promising technologies
resulting from academic research throughout New York State, the
Center now devotes considerable resources to the early-stage development
of these technologies. Translation of basic research discoveries
into commercially promising technology provides a valuable link
between the intellectual resources of the academic sector and the
commercial capabilities of industry. As a result, our corporate
partners have better access to innovative technologies that have
been taken beyond the conceptual stage of development. |

Research Focus
The Center focuses in Medical Biotechnology, primarily through
grant funding of academic faculty research. Research programs are
in a broad range of areas but include research, diagnostic, and
therapeutic products and technologies. All are commercially relevant
research projects. Staff expertise is in molecular and cell biology,
medical laboratory technology, drug discovery, including high-throughput
screening, and drug development. An active research effort is in
functional genomics technologies within the Center's Applied Bioscience

Constituents Served
The Center has extensive collaborative agreements with New York's
biotechnology industry, as well as, national and international biotechnology
and pharmaceutical firms. The Center seeks to support collaborative
research arrangements between industry and academia. New York companies
qualify for the Center's grant programs and reduced overhead rates
on research projects. The Center will help to identify appropriate
faculty for collaboration, consultation, and/or contract research.
The Center also provides extensive assistance to companies looking
to locate in New York State. Companies interested in participating
in the Center's Undergraduate Research Internship programs, or its
graduate student Internship in Biotechnology and Patent Law program,
should contact the Center for further information. |
