T. Rubin, Ph.D.
Distinguished Professor and Director
Clinton
Rubin is Professor and Director of the Center for Biotechnology,
which is a New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Medical Biotechnology,
at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The Center links the
intellectual and physical resources of NY Universities to the biotechnology,
pharmaceutical, and medical device industries. Founded with the mission
to forge linkages between academic scientists and industry, the Center
for Biotechnology now counts more than 200 corporations among its affiliates.
The Center facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations between industry
and faculty, supports innovative product-oriented research, enhances technology
development, and establishes new biomedical companies when appropriate.
Particular expertise includes: cell and developmental biology, chemical
synthesis, oral biology, skin and wound healing, MRI and spectroscopy
infectious diseases and virology, medical imaging, instrumentation and
biomaterials.
Dr. Rubin is also the Chair of the Department
of Biomedical Engineering, which has developed a multidisciplinary
graduate and undergraduate (bioengineering) program around the many faculty
at the University and Brookhaven National Laboratories who are working
on issues related to Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology. Currently,
there are over forty faculty involved in the program, and the areas of
emphasis include biomechanics, biomaterials, medical imaging, computational
modeling, bioprocessing, biotechnology and instrumentation. More specific

Dr. Rubin's research interests focus on using biophysical
stimuli (e.g., mechanical, electrical, temperature, acoustic), to accelerate
the processes of wound healing and osseointegration, and as an intervention
for osteoporosis. Dr. Rubins work is currently funded by NIH, NASA,
the Whitaker Foundation, private industry and NYSTAR. Dr. Rubin holds
five patents, with three pending, in the area of wound repair and treatment
of bone disease. Finally, Dr. Rubin is a founder of a publicly traded
medical device company (Exogen, Inc.).

Fabel
Director, Operations
Ms.
Fabel has primary responsibility for the financing and management of daily
operations, and has played a critical role in shaping the strategic direction
of the Center. She serves as a liaison between the bioscience industry,
the Center, and the academic community in the establishment of research
collaborations, new product development, company formations, and other
forms of economic impact. Her extensive experience in the development
of programs to support company start-ups is vital to the CAT's Technology
Development Initiative. Ms. Fabel played a strategic role in the development
of the New York Biotechnology Association and the Long Island High Technology
Incubator program. She received her M.S. degree in technology management
from SUNY Stony Brook.
Angeline Yeo-Judex, MPA has direct responsibility for the Center’s resource development activities with the objective of supporting the expansion and sustainability of Center programs, goals, and objectives. She assumes full responsibility for the marketing and public relations functions at the Center.
Angeline also holds key responsibility for the strategic planning, development and implementation of the Center's Workforce Development Initiative statewide that effectively and efficiently address the needs of New York State bioscience industry. She serves as the Director for the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry program. The program is highly innovative and is focused on developing industry savvy life science graduates and post-docs ready to leverage their scientific and technical skills to meet the demands of the dynamic life sciences industry.
Angeline’s public relations and outreach efforts focus on establishing and enhancing the Center's relationships with academic and research institutions and regional and international bioscience industry organizations. She played a strategic role in the development of the Long Island Life Sciences Initiative (LILSI) and continues to provide guidance to LILSI on marketing strategies and regional workforce development initiatives.
Angeline has more than 15 years of strategic planning, communications and management experience in both the corporate and non-profit sectors. Prior to joining the Center for Biotechnology, Angeline held a variety of positions in corporate advertising at worldwide agencies, BBDO Canada and MacLaren McCann, overseeing regional and national accounts such as General Motors and Dairy Queen Canada and at an in-house corporate marketing department of a national sporting goods retailer. She has extensive experience in media relations, creative production management and strategic planning.
She holds an MPA from Baruch College, NYC and a BA (Hons) Sociology from the University of Calgary, Canada.
Joseph
Scaduto, M.S., MBA
Assistant Director, Business Development
Mr. Scaduto currently serves as the Assistant Director of Business Development at the Center for Biotechnology (CFB) resident at Stony Brook University, as well as the founding Executive Director of the Long Island Life Sciences Initiative (LILSI). He has almost 10 years of experience providing business development expertise, strategic planning services and technology commercialization guidance to emerging and expanding bioscience companies on Long Island and throughout New York State. Mr. Scaduto is primarily responsible for corporate outreach, industry relations and government affairs activities on behalf of the CFB. In addition, Mr. Scaduto co-manages the yearly Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program, which provides up to $250,000 in direct investments in technology development projects in partnership with New York State companies. Mr. Scaduto leads efforts to plan and execute the annual Life Sciences Industry Summit, while administering several programs meant to facilitate industry-academic interactions, technology transfer and new company formation. Moreover, Mr. Scaduto leads fundraising activities meant to support CFB programs and services, soliciting over $100,000 in corporate sponsorships and grant commitments annually.
Mr. Scaduto serves on the Tenant Selection and Review Committee of the Long Island High Technology Incubator (LIHTI), the Stony Brook University Software Incubator, and the Stony Brook University Incubator at Calverton. He is also an active member of the Bioscience Screening Committee of the Long Island Angel Network (LIAN), the Selection Committee of the annual Long Island Technology Hall of Fame, and the Advisory Committee of the Long Island Index produced annually by the Rauch Foundation. He is a co-founder of the New York State Regional Bioscience Council and the New York Loves BIO marketing campaign. Mr. Scaduto holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Binghamton University (1999), a Master of Science degree in biotechnology from Northwestern University (2000), and a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in finance from Stony Brook University (2008). Mr. Scaduto is also a graduate of the Middle Management Program administered by the Institute for Not-For-Profit Management (INM) at the Columbia University School of Business (2005).
Michael R. Bielski, J.D., M.S.
Assistant Director, Science & Technology Commercialization
Mr. Bielski is responsible for developing and implementing strategic consulting, business development and technology commercialization services on behalf of medical technology companies throughout Long Island and New York State in an effort to generate positive economic impact in the form of private investments, non-dilutive government grants, job creation and corporate revenues. Mr. Bielski also co-manages the Innovative Technology Development (ITD) program that invests $250,000 annually in early stage technologies that require proof-of-concept research.
Mr. Bielski brings his experience in working with early-stage companies and their investors to the Center for Biotechnology (CFB). Prior to joining the CFB, Mr. Bielski was a senior associate at ipCapital Group, Inc. where his practice included developing and implementing intellectual property, licensing, partnership and capital fundraising strategies for medical technology companies. His practice also included conducting due diligence for venture capital firms looking to identify and mitigate the risks associated with their investments.
In addition to his role at the CFB, Mr. Bielski is adjunct faculty in the College of Business at Stony Brook University, where he teaches courses on technology commercialization.
Mr. Bielski received a B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook, a M.S. in Neuroscience from Syracuse University, and a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law, where he was a research associate at the Technology Commercialization Research Center (TCRC)
Kate Posnanski
Manager, Programs and Events
Ms. Posnanski joined the Center for Biotechnology full-time in 2005. She received her B.A. in Communication from the University of Delaware and also holds a certification in Graphic Design from Hofstra University.
Ms. Posnanski manages the coordination of all of the Center for Biotechnology's programs
and events as well as the Center's varied communication needs.
Karin Bengtsson
Finance Manager
Ms. Karin Bengtsson joined the Center in November 2007 as Finance Manager, Ms. Bengtsson has a B.A in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Lund, Sweden. She handles the day-to-day financial administration of the Center and it's various programs and activities. In addition she takes care of personel administration, and provides background for financial projections and reporting.
