Rubin is Professor and Director of the Center for Biotechnology,
which is a New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Medical Biotechnology,
at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The Center links the
intellectual and physical resources of NY Universities to the biotechnology,
pharmaceutical, and medical device industries. Founded with the mission
to forge linkages between academic scientists and industry, the Center
for Biotechnology now counts more than 200 corporations among its affiliates.
The Center facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations between industry
and faculty, supports innovative product-oriented research, enhances technology
development, and establishes new biomedical companies when appropriate.
Particular expertise includes: cell and developmental biology, chemical
synthesis, oral biology, skin and wound healing, MRI and spectroscopy
infectious diseases and virology, medical imaging, instrumentation and
biomaterials.
Dr. Rubin is also the Chair of the Department
of Biomedical Engineering, which has developed a multidisciplinary
graduate and undergraduate (bioengineering) program around the many faculty
at the University and Brookhaven National Laboratories who are working
on issues related to Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology. Currently,
there are over forty faculty involved in the program, and the areas of
emphasis include biomechanics, biomaterials, medical imaging, computational
modeling, bioprocessing, biotechnology and instrumentation. More specific
information on the program, its goals, its faculty and students, can be
collected via the homepage: www.bme.sunysb.edu
Dr. Rubin's research interests focus on using biophysical
stimuli (e.g., mechanical, electrical, temperature, acoustic), to accelerate
the processes of wound healing and osseointegration, and as an intervention
for osteoporosis. Dr. Rubins work is currently funded by NIH, NASA,
the Whitaker Foundation, private industry and NYSTAR. Dr. Rubin holds
five patents, with three pending, in the area of wound repair and treatment
of bone disease. Finally, Dr. Rubin is a founder of a publicly traded
medical device company (Exogen, Inc.).
