Clinton T. Rubin, Ph.D.
Distinguished Professor and Director

Dr. Rubin is a fellow of the American Institute of Biological and Medical Engineers, and a recipient of the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, two Kappa Delta Awards from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the John Charnley Award from the Hip Society, the Fuller Albright Award from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, and the Giovanni Borelli Award from the American Society of Biomechanics.

Dr. Rubin’s work is targeted towards understanding the cellular mechanisms responsible for the growth, healing, and homeostasis of bone. This work focuses on how biophysical stimuli (i.e., mechanical, electrical, temperature, magnetic, pressure) mediate these responses through the control of mesenchymal stem cell differentiation and proliferation.

Dr. Rubin is currently funded by NIH, NASA, the Whitaker Foundation, private industry and the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation. Dr. Rubin holds twenty-two patents, with fourteen pending, in the area of wound repair, stem cell regulation, and treatment of bone disease. Dr. Rubin is a founder of Exogen, Inc., now a subsidiary of Smith + Nephew, Inc., Juvent, Inc., a start-up focusing on osteoporosis treatment and Marodyne Medical, a medical device company utilizing biophysical stimuli to treat human injury and disease.

Dr. Rubin earned his BA in Physiology from Harvard University and his PhD in Anatomy from the University of Bristol, England. He held positions at Tufts University and Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston before coming to Stony Brook University in 1987.


Diane Fabel
Director, Operations

Ms. Fabel has primary responsibility for the financing and management of daily operations, and has played a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of the CFB. She serves as a liaison between the bioscience industry, the CFB and the academic community in the establishment of research collaborations, new product development, company formations, and other forms of economic impact.

Ms. Fabel's extensive experience in the development of programs to support company start-ups is vital to the CAT's Technology Development Initiative. Ms. Fabel played a strategic role in the development of the New York Biotechnology Association and the Long Island High Technology Incubator program.

Ms. Fabel received her M.S. degree in technology management from SUNY Stony Brook.

Joseph Scaduto, M.S., MBA
Assistant Director, Business Development

Mr. Scaduto is responsible for corporate outreach, industry relations and government affairs activities. Mr. Scaduto co-manages the yearly Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program, which provides up to $250,000 investments for technology development projects in partnership with New York State companies. Mr. Scaduto administers several programs to facilitate industry-academic interactions, technology transfer and new company formation, including BioPartnering Meetings, BioStrategy Sessions and the Technology Commercialization Clinic (TCC).

Mr. Scaduto also serves on the Tenant Selection and Review Committee of the Long Island High Technology Incubator (LIHTI), the Stony Brook University Software Incubator, and the Stony Brook University Incubator at Calverton. He is the Chair of the Bioscience Screening Committee of the Long Island Angel Network (LIAN), the Selection Committee of the annual Long Island Technology Hall of Fame, and the Advisory Committee of the Long Island Index produced annually by the Rauch Foundation. Mr. Scaduto is a co-founder of the New York State Regional Bioscience Council and the New York Loves BIO marketing campaign administered by the New York State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC).

Mr. Scaduto holds a B.S. in biology from Binghamton University (1999), an M.S. in biotechnology from Northwestern University (2000), and an M.B.A. with a concentration in finance from Stony Brook University (2008). Mr. Scaduto is also a graduate of the Middle Management Program administered by the Institute for Not-For-Profit Management (INM) at the Columbia University School of Business (2005).

Michael R. Bielski, J.D., M.S.
Assistant Director, Science & Technology Commercialization

Mr. Bielski is responsible for developing and implementing strategic consulting, business development and technology commercialization services on behalf of medical technology companies throughout Long Island and New York State in an effort to generate positive economic impact in the form of private investments, non-dilutive government grants, job creation and corporate revenues. Mr. Bielski also co-manages the Innovative Technology Development (ITD) program that invests $250,000 annually in early stage technologies that require proof-of-concept research.

Mr. Bielski brings his experience in working with early-stage companies and their investors to the Center for Biotechnology (CFB). Prior to joining the CFB, Mr. Bielski was a senior associate at ipCapital Group, Inc. where his practice included developing and implementing intellectual property, licensing, partnership and capital fundraising strategies for medical technology companies. His practice also included conducting due diligence for venture capital firms looking to identify and mitigate the risks associated with their investments.

In addition to his role at the CFB, Mr. Bielski is adjunct faculty in the College of Business at Stony Brook University, where he teaches courses on technology commercialization.

Mr. Bielski received a B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook, a M.S. in Neuroscience from Syracuse University, and a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law, where he was a research associate at the Technology Commercialization Research Center (TCRC) back to top

Kate Hutchinson
Manager, Programs and Events

Ms. Hutchinson is responsible for the management and implementation of the CFB's events, programs and communications. She leads the planning, development and execution of major CFB initiatives including the annual Life Sciences Summit as well as the CFB’s cornerstone work force development program, the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry program.

In addition to her program and event roles, Ms. Hutchinson also is responsible for the CFB’s communication needs. In this role, she develops, maintains and executes the varied communication mediums employed by the CFB. Ms. Hutchinson has also developed and designed many of the CFB’s promotional pieces.

Ms. Hutchinson received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication from the University of Delaware and also holds certifications in Graphic Design from Hofstra University and Website Design from Stony Brook University.

Karin Bengtsson
Finance Manager

Ms. Karin Bengtsson joined the CFB in November 2007 as Finance Manager.  She handles the day-to-day financial administration of the CFB and it's various programs and activities. In addition, she takes care of personnel administration, and provides background for financial projections and reporting.

Ms. Bengtsson has a B.A in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Lund, Sweden.

Heather Bielski
Programs Assistant

Heather BielskiMs. Bielski joined the CFB in May 2010 as a Marketing Intern and now serves as a program assistant for the Center. Ms. Bielski assists in the recruitment of early stage life science companies to participate in the Center's annual Life Sciences Summit and manages the events' social networking efforts. In addition to her responsibilities for the Life Sciences Summit, Ms. Bielski assists with the administration for the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program and the Fundamentals Alumni Network. Ms. Bielski is currently pursuing her B.S in Biology at Stony Brook University.

Technology Commercialization Fellows

Lidia Sobkow, Ph.D.
2012 Technology Commercialization Fellow

Lidia SobkowDr. Sobkow joined CFB as a Technology Commercialization Fellow in January 2012 to support the bioscience business development and commercialization consulting programs designed to aid start-up company growth and transition of new life sciences technologies into the successful product. Her work involves project management for emerging bioscience corporate and academic clients of Technology Commercialization Clinic (TCC), while overseeing student teams from the College of Business (SBU) and Fundamentals of Bioscience Program (CFB). Dr. Sobkow is also responsible for initiating and maintaining client relationships and partaking in development of new services and initiatives on the academia and industry interface. Dr Sobkow has a M.S. in biotechnology from Warsaw University of Technology (Poland, 2001), PhD in Molecular Biology from Max Planck Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics (Dresden, Germany, 2006). Prior to joining CFB, Dr.Sobkow was a postdoctoral scholar in fields of stem cells/tissue engineering and biochemistry, both in Germany and US, she is also alumni of CFB's Fundamentals of Bioscience Industry Program 2011.

Ritu Goyanka, Ph.D.
(2010-2011 Technology Commercialization Fellow)

Lauren Brooks, J.D.
(2009-2010 Technology Commercialization Fellow)

Ms. Brooks is actively engaged as a project manager for corporate and academic clients of the Technology Commercialization Clinic (TCC), working to address critical business questions facing emerging and expanding bioscience firms while overseeing student teams from the College of Business at Stony Brook University and Touro Law School. Ms. Brooks is also responsible for initiating client relationships while helping to develop new programs and services that will further the core mission and objectives of the CFB. Ms. Brooks joined the CFB as a Technology Commercialization Fellow in October of 2009 to support the implementation of business development and translational research programs meant to foster new venture creation and bioscience company growth. Ms. Brooks has a B.A. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Prior to joining the CFB, Ms. Brooks was an associate at Ropes & Gray LLP where she worked as a patent litigator.
