Stony Brook, NY. October 5, 2005. The Center for Biotechnology, A New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Medical Biotechnology, at Stony Brook University, in partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY) is pleased to present the 2005 4th Annual Life Sciences Career Development Conference “Building Successful Industry-University Partnerships: Careers, Collaborations & Contracts”. It will be held at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City on October 19th and 20th from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

The Annual Conference is the premier event in New York State for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows interested in exploring careers and opportunities in the life sciences industry. In 2005, the conference will expand from one to two days to host the 1st Annual Northeast Biomedical Engineering Career Conference. This will broaden student, industry and faculty participation to include the medical device sector and companies working at the intersection of the life sciences industry. New this year is a special interest track for entrepreneurial minded students and faculty, which recognizes that while many participants will pursue career paths within industry, many others will seek to develop industry relationships from within the academic environment. The Center has also partnered with BioSpace HireHealth to provide an online resume database that would help connect industry with the best and brightest.

“There is a significant need for individuals with cross disciplinary educations as well as an awareness and understanding of the commercial sector in the biotechnology industry. This conference is an excellent opportunity for industry to communicate its needs and develop long term relationships with the graduate student population” says Dr. Neil Gibson, Chief Scientific Officer, OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

“New York State industry partners have voices concern over their inability to find qualified candidates at the graduate/ Ph. D level to fill current and anticipated expansion. This difficulty is not an indication of a lack of talent in our institutions but rather an absence of communication between graduate student populations and the life sciences industry”, states Dr. Clinton Rubin, Director, Center for Biotechnology and Professor and Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Stony Brook University.

The conference will feature plenary speakers Dr. Jan Vilcek, Remicade co-inventor and donor of $105M to NYU School of Medicine, Mr. Bill Fair, Managing Director, Healthcare and Biosciences, New York Economic Development Corporation and Dr. Neil Gibson, Chief Scientific Officer, OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Attendees will hear more than 20 engaging and provocative panel presentations from more than 50 leading industry professionals from OSI Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, Bausch and Lomb, Pall Corporation, Forest Laboratories, Acorda Therapeutics, Cornerstone Pharmaceuticals, Centocor Inc, Deutsche Bank, Immunomedics, Rodman & Renshaw, LLC, Financial Dynamics Business Communications, Ogilvy PR Worldwide, NYSTAR, NYC Economic Development Corporation and more as they discuss issues of critical importance to life sciences industry that will provide an invaluable insight into the challenges and rewards professionals in these career pathways face in the dynamic life sciences industry.
