Strategic Issues in Business & Technology Development

Building a Strong University Biotech Patent Portfolio
A Panel Discussion Hosted by Cohen Pontani Lieberman & Pavane LLP

This panel will explore the unique opportunities and challenges involved in developing a biotechnology patent portfolio in a university setting. Our experts will explain the substantive legal hurdles to overcome when patenting biotech inventions resulting from early stage research. They will also cover strategies used by universities to determine which technologies to patent – and not to patent, to procure licenses and funding, and to establish collaborations. Finally, our panel will address factors such as cost constraints and free-spirited inventors, and how universities can build strong patent portfolios despite such potential obstacles.

Pre-Clinical Regulatory Strategies: Advancing Into Clinical Trials
A Panel Discussion Hosted by Target Health, Inc.

The majority of life sciences companies in the region are early stage firms pursuing research and development activities to move their products and services towards market. For new therapeutics and diagnostics, the FDA regulated clinical trial process is a significant and expensive barrier to market entry. Experts will provide companies with insights into preparing for human testing and gearing up for working with the FDA.

Developing a Marketing Strategy and Preparing Investor Presentations

Long Island is home to a growing number of emerging and early-stage firms seeking investment capital, and management must understand what investors are expecting in order to close the deal. Creating a brand identity and marketing message is critical, even at the nascent stages of product and corporate development. This panel will discuss effective investor relations, communications and brand development strategies to help companies create a robust marketing plan, including common pitfalls to avoid.
