Research Project:
Behavioral and Ecological Interactions of Raptors and Lemurs in Southeastern Madagascar

Research Focus:
This study of the predator-prey interactions of raptors and lemurs in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar was designed to provide information on 1) the specific ecological interactions between lemurs and their diurnal aerial predators, and 2) the behavioral responses of lemurs to their diverse predator community. Focus raptor species include Buteo brachypterus, Accipiter henstii, Polyboroides radiatus, and Eutriorchis astur while lemur species include Propithecus d. edwardsi, Eulemur f. rufus, and Hapalemur g. griseus. Raptor nest observations and radio-tracking were combined with lemur playback and model predator experiments to provide critical behavioral and ecological data needed to protect Malagasy raptors, lemurs and their ecosystems and to quantify rates and risks of raptor predation on lemurs.
