Français

Identification

Breeding plumage: dark brown upperparts and wings, underparts whitish, head black and grey with russet cheeks. Red iris. Yellow green feet.
Non-breeding: similar but paler and less intense.

Ecology

Found in lakes an slow moving streams, especially those containing the waterlily, Nymphaea stellata. Eats aquatic insects, fish and crustaceans.. (UICN 1990)

Behavior

Breeding occurs mostly at the end of the rainy season (when the water is highest and aquatic vegetation most abundant). Clutch size is three or four eggs.

Threats

The introduction of Tilapia spp. has decreased its habitat while increasing that of the Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis). Pollution of the water around Tana, and hybidization with the Little Grebe (T. ruficollis) are also problems. (UICN 1990)
