A mid-sized carnivore, bigger than a cat with a very wide tail. Its upperparts are light brown, while the underparts fade to grey-brown.

They prey on earthworms and other invertebrates (Garbutt, 1999).
They are nocturnal.
They are usually solitary, though small (family-sized) groups have been observed.
Mating occurs in July-August with a 1 or 2 infants born November-January. Infants are fully furred and have open eyes at birth. They forage with their mother at day 2, and are weaned at 9 weeks.
They lay down fat reserves for the winter in their tails, which can total up to .8kg.
They mark boundaries with anogenital, and neck marks.
