A large Microgale, with a tail roughly the same size as the body. The pelage is long, brown above, grey underneath. (Garbutt, 1999)

Forages on the ground, listening for its prey. It may even use echolocation.
A solitary species, like most tenrecs, probably with some form of territoriality. Breeding takes place in austral spring/summer with a gestation period of 62-64 days.
M. dobsoni is the only tenrec known to store fat in its tail for the winter.
